Goal: For fun — see explanation down below for more!
The soldier card was the card that started the entire idea of making a deck a of cards. In these cards I wanted to showcase my fascination for sharp, angular art styles. Much inspiration came from Robert Valley’s art style.
Soldier Card
In the captain card, I want to emphasize the look of a power trip and smugness, that most captains are betrayed in media. To show this, I made his jawline and butt chin pronounced, with the addition of his massive cigar and fur coat.
Captain Card
The one generalization I love being portrayed is the stupid, unsure king. Here I wanted to showcase that in his unsure mouth expression with the added fact of his coat being tucked inside the diamond shape. I also purposely put each character in shapes that best represent them. As shown here, clearly the diamonds in the king’s crown are a reference to the diamond shape he is in.
KING Card
The Politician card was the one card I had the most fun creating. In all the cards you see, you can’t see their eyes. This is supposed to represent how these figures can be anyone! The reason why this was the most fun to draw is because I had to think of a way to cover his eyes without making it too obvious. So, I used the fat of his face combined with his expressive brow line to hide his eyes.
